Writing for Convergent Media | Fall 2024 Cohort Work
The Writing for Convergent Technology course explores how to tell good stories, across the endless digital platforms and formats available to us in the comms field, from press releases to pitches, blogs, and beyond. In the Fall 2024 semester, each of my students created a final multimedia project, self-directing a topic and outlet that resonated most with them:
JD made the case for respecting the art of fanfiction as a legitimate writing practice that defies the publishing gatekeeping complex and creates the representation it wishes to see in the world.
Drishti developed a resource to confront misinformation in the media and educate on best practices for identifying and resisting fake news.
Josh wrote a cultural critique on how social media trends enforce self-fetishization and cheapen lived experiences.
Savannah created a video explainer on changing trends in the representation of queer women in music and the historical context of sapphic trailblazers.
Maggie recorded a podcast episode diving into parasocial relationships and how rising supernova Chappell Roan is disrupting norms in celebrity media coverage.
Emma wrote an essay on how juggernaut Sex and the City continues to impact media and culture today, 26 years after its pilot episode/
Other students explored topics in hypocrisy in American political communications, the relationship between media consumption and mental health, and gendered power dynamics in convergent media coverage.
